Handfasting today is becoming more popular as many people are looking for an alternative to the cookie cutter wedding ceremony we are more familiar with. People who choose this form of ancient wedding ritual are usually those who want to acknowledge their love, and intention to commit, in a more natural setting that encompasses the forces of nature and perhaps their own spiritual beliefs.

Handfasting is a beautiful marriage ritual based on ancient Celtic tradition

Most often a Handfasting will be held outside, in as natural a setting as possible, amongst nature and the elements.  Handfastings are a time of joyous revelry and magical merriment. The ceremony is presided over by celebrants who adhere to Pagan or Earth based traditions believing in the forces of Nature and the Universe.  During this ancient rite, hands are bound together with cord. This is the actual “Handfasting” and the cord signifies their love while the knot, the gentle binding of their mutual commitment - hence the saying “tying the knot”.  Rings are exchanged, along with promises of love, and the whole rite is viewed as a sacred act between the two.

At the end of the ceremony the happy couple jump the broomstick which is a symbol of their joining together and crossing a threshold from one life into a new one. Food and wine are then shared with the guests to celebrate this wonderful occasion. A Handfasting is a truly beautiful and moving ceremony to behold and guests will take away with them a sense of times past and true romance.

On the day itself we perform the Handfasting ceremony, creating and facilitating the magical energy that binds two people as one. We like to meet all our couples face to face, and work closely with them every step of the way. We will listen to all your wishes and needs and point you in the right direction so that your day is all that you would wish it to be. We provide a selection of scripts and ceremonies, from which you can choose your favourite, and then we will take you step by step through the whole procedure. Handfastings are often held in natural settings, often areas of outstanding beauty and we can obtain permission in places such as Avebury stone circle, Stonehenge, in woodlands and on moorlands.

Jacqui is a Witch and High Priestess with many years experience. Her Witchcraft is very eclectic, drawing from lots of different modern traditions and ideas. She has officiated over many Handfastings and other public ceremonies over the years and she has an international qualification in Wedding and Event Planning. She also works as a Pagan Prison Chaplain in the South West.

Emma’s spiritual practice is very personal and draws on earth-based, ancient and shamanic traditions from around the world. She has many years experience as a healer and counsellor, specialising in natural medicine, holistic nutrition and stress management. She also facilitates guided meditations and journeys. In the past Emma has worked as an event planner on a range of events, from small parties to national celebrations such as the Lord Mayor of London’s 800th anniversary.
