Real Wedding Story photographer, Jennifer Jane shoots into the rugged landscape of the MoorTweet
This is the story of Bethan and Simon Lane
The Perfect Place
We had our Wedding Reception at Neadon Barn in Manaton, Dartmoor. We wanted to create a relaxed, festival-style ambience, with lots of entertainment for all ages, including archery and excellent bands ‘La Juega’ and ‘The Ferrantes’
We chose to get married at St Mary’s Church, Abbotskerswell. It had been my (Bethan) family church since I was small, and my sister also got married there.
The Guest List
We had 120 guests who had travelled from all over the UK, as well as some friends that had come to the wedding from France.
We had a budget and were able to mostly stick to it. We had a lot of help from family and friends offering their skills to help us keep costs down. One of our friends drove us to the Church in a London black cab, we had family helping to arrange posies at the reception and one of our friends helped me to make our centerpieces. We were very grateful for everyone’s help which meant that we could keep our costs down.
I wore a wedding dress that had vintage-y pinky hues to the netting and Simon wore a brown suit with a dusky pink tie. Our colour scheme was dusky pink and sage green.
We had catering provided by Fairfoods Catering, a vegan catering company.
They provided beautiful food from Hazel and Cashew Roast to vegan quiches and curries and lots of beautiful salads and dips. Our wedding cake was a Rose and Pistachio vegan cake which fitted in well with our colour scheme and was a recipe that I had made myself a few times and loved. I gave the recipe to a family friend who made it for us.
Your Vision and the Green Elements
It was important for us to have a vegan wedding and to demonstrate to our friends and family how delicious vegan food can be. A lot of our decoration was second-hand or hand-made so that it can be reused over and over again. For example, I repurposed an old suitcase as a card donation case and lined it with left over material that has a map design, as we asked for contributions towards our honeymoon.
Can you be both Stylish and Green on your Wedding Day?
Absolutely. Charity and Vintage shops are a fantastic source for outfits and for decorating your venue.
Tips for other Couples planning to throw a Green Wedding …
Throw a wedding that is personal to you, and if you would like it to, one that represents your values. Your wedding day is a celebration of you as a couple and your love for one another so try not to let others influence you.
Top Tip from the Groom
Don’t take your wedding ring off to wash your hands, forget you have done that and then ask the whole wedding party to look for your ring…
What does marriage mean to you both?
I walked down the aisle to ‘Life is Better with You’ by Michael Franti. When Michael Franti wrote this song, the idea behind it was that even the worst day with his wife is better than the best day he ever had before she was in his life. To us that is what marriage is about: loving each other through the good days and the bad days and growing in unity.
Our photographer was Jen from Jennifer Jane Photography. She did a fantastic job of capturing our day and we particularly loved our couples’ photoshoot in amongst the wilderness of Dartmoor.
