It's clear that we're all becoming increasingly concerned about the environmental impact that our lifestyles are having. If you're trying to be more eco-conscious, you might have given up single-use plastic, committed to recycling as much of your household waste as possible, and reduced the number of car journeys you take. But, if you're due to get married soon, have you thought about planning an eco-friendly honeymoon?
Of course, most travel is going to be on hold for a lot of 2020 due to the coronavirus crisis, but it's expected that things should be back to normal by 2021. So, if you're using this time to plan your trip of a lifetime, here are three of the most eco-friendly destinations that should be on your radar.
Iceland is a fantastic honeymoon destination at any time of year. There's plenty to do in its capital city of Reykjavik, but the country is also home to some natural wonders that are sure to make your honeymoon extra-special. Of course, you could be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the wonderful Northern Lights, and there's also the Blue Lagoon to experience. You can visit a whole host of impressive waterfalls, geysers, black sand beaches, and ice caves, as well as glacier formations. There's are so many great sights to behold.
The country has some fantastic green credentials, too. It's been extending its geothermal energy systems since the 1930s, which now provides around a third of Iceland's power. Along with hydropower, it has almost eliminated the use of coal. The percentage of the country's energy that comes from oil has also fallen from 70% to 25% since the 1960s (WWF). So, if you do pay a visit to Iceland, you can be confident that you're supporting a country that's doing its bit for the environment.
If you and your partner have been dreaming of a beautiful beach holiday, where you can be as active or relaxed as you like, Costa Rica is the perfect environmentally friendly destination for you. The country boasts an incredible array of wildlife, rainforests, and plenty of opportunities for adventure. Or, if you're in need of some rest and recuperation, you can spend your days relaxing with a book and cocktail on one of Costa Rica's many stunning beaches.
You won't have to worry about your carbon footprint while you're there, either. 95–98% of the country's energy already comes from renewable sources, and it's aiming to become the first carbon-neutral country by the end of 2020 (World Future Council).
New Zealand is bursting with natural beauty, so it makes sense that those who run the country would want to preserve it. This is the perfect destination if you're looking to turn your honeymoon into an adventure. There are so many beautiful cycling and hiking trails dotted around, and you could try your hand at kayaking, sailing, diving, or even skiing if you visit at the right time of year. Or, if you're simply looking to relax and recharge after your big day, the country boasts plenty of spas and wellness centres where you can do just that.
It's largely considered a 'green nation', too, so you can visit guilt-free. Roughly 80% of the electricity generated in New Zealand is renewable (The Spinoff), and The Ministry of Economic Development is constantly looking for new ways to ensure businesses and consumers are doing their bit to reduce the country's contribution to climate change (Blue and Green Tomorrow). It should definitely be on the list of eco-friendly destinations you're considering for your honeymoon.
