INSPIRATION - A Sustainable Boho Canvas & Light Tipi Wedding Editorial at Fiesta Fields, Captured by Abigail White

INSPIRATION - A Sustainable Boho Canvas & Light Tipi Wedding Editorial at Fiesta Fields, Captured by Abigail WhiteNikki Ford established Fiesta Fields after her own outdoor wedding 5 years ago, with the aim of bringing together beautiful blank canvas outdoor spaces in Surrey and Sussex with people who want to celebrate in a way that’s unique to them. More recently she set up Canvas & Light with her husband, offering beautiful off-white giant hat tipis for hire. At Canvas & Light, they contribute towards offsetting their carbon by purchasing Treecelets for their clients. They also have a little initiative planned for Fiesta Fields that they plan to launch when the wedding world is back up and running, but for now, that’s hush-hush!

INSPIRATION - A Sustainable Boho Canvas & Light Tipi Wedding Editorial at Fiesta Fields, Captured by Abigail WhiteNikki says:

"I have always tried to take positive steps towards sustainability in my personal life and am passionate about filtering this through into our outdoor events. Events can be wasteful, whether outdoor or not, but I’m a firm believer that every little helps. If we can start to train ourselves to make conscious choices, with the environment in mind, then this can only be a step in the right direction. I hope this shoot and our supplier choices will give couples some ideas that they can apply to their own wedding".

The Bride and Groom

The wedding dress provided by Bridal Indulgence radiated the boho-luxe vibe; to complement it, Gemma Louise Bridal created a bold makeup look, softened by classic boho waves for the Bride's hair. A fresh flower crown made by Kayleigh of The Flower Hub, topped off her outfit. Kayleigh is doing her best to be green:

“We no longer use floral foam or plastics. We don't use any 'biodegradable' replacements either as they still all take 4 years to decompose. I use willow and moss to secure large arrangements and then use a twool [twine made from wool] or string. As for flowers, we use British flowers as much as possible which are grown in Guildford from an extremely eco-friendly flower farm (they don't have electricity!)”.

The Ceremony Styling

They can be used multiple times, and she can also create large floral installations that would generally be out of budget or logistics to create with fresh flowers.

“We reuse florals and foliage for a year or longer. This can amount to up to 15 weddings! Once we feel they are no longer fit for wedding use we donate them to design colleges and schools for art and fashion projects... most recently our blooms adorned a whole collection at a London fashion show.

When preparing flowers for arrangements instead of throwing the stems away we store them, these are then used to extend the life of florals we have previously had to trim so we can use them in various heights of vases again and again! The leaves are also kept to use when making more delicate pieces like floral crowns or hair combs.

When it comes to packaging we don’t use bubble wrap or single-use plastics. Our shredded cardboard packing is extremely effective and clients’ buttonholes and corsages are delivered in cardboard gift boxes.”

Alongside Clare of Turmeric House, Emily created the blessing setting, using Canvas & Light's naked ceremony tipi, set up on a hilltop looking out over the Surrey Hills.

The Tipi Styling

Never one to see something thrown away, Clare will snap up and collect items such as lobster pots, old rickshaws, peacock chairs, old theatre props and sets, always with ideas on how to give them a new lease of life. She is also a foraging queen and can disappear off, coming back arms full of styling elements, straight from nature, and her collection of pampas grasses and dried florals is impressive and they add gorgeous textures, with the added benefit of being reusable.

Clare used her sprayed crab traps as light shades, softened with draped fabric and dried florals. Emily and Clare also created a ‘living installation’ of ivy and greens wound horizontally around a central pole using Canvas & Light's antique Edison pendant lighting. More of Emily's faux flower installations also graced the interior of the tipi.

The Table Styling

Kayleigh styled up a table with a sunny, bright festival vibe. Showing that less is more, these multiple vases with a small selection of stems in each is so effective and evocative of summer days.

Festival wedding vibes really suit street food, but Nikki thought it was important not to get too carried away with the ‘sustainable options’, such as palm leaf plates. It may not be plastic and trees may not be cut down to produce them, but at the end of the day, it’s still waste. Although compostable, these items undoubtedly end up in black bin bags and in a landfill or incinerator. Unfortunately, there are very few caterers that sort through food waste to separate these items.

On the other hand, crockery, cutlery and real glasses are used time and time again. Nikki also recommends cutting down on the amount of glassware by using a single glass for red and white wine on the table and encouraging guests to keep hold of their glass throughout the evening. Couvert make a point of buying from suppliers who use solar-driven furnaces and are also investing in recycled options. They use eco detergents and eco cling wrap for their washing up and hire process.

The Grazing Table

Dani locally sources her produce, choosing organic wherever possible, even growing some of her own. Careful management of produce limits waste, for example, repurposing overripe produce in sauces and preserves and carefully composting and recycling.

Stationery

They use camp beds now, because of the plastic waste from airbeds. (When they switched from airbeds they donated all old beds to the scouts so they would get used until they finally died). They recycle probably 80% of their old stock, whether that’s selling off old tents, old duvets going to the local homeless shelter, and old blankets go to a dog rescue charity. The crew have reusable water bottles, their office power is drawn from solar panels and they’ve signed up to Offset Earth to plant trees each month.
