Personalising Your Wedding Day Without Breaking Your Budget by Somerset Wedding Venue, Gants MillGants Mill is sited on the River Brue in Somerset; it powers their mill which they use to generate hydroelectricity, as well as grinding barley for their sheep and powering the saw benches that the owner,  Greg, uses to process the firewood that is harvested from managing their land.

An outdoor wedding in a garden has the added bonus of contributing to your styling the natural way, and at no extra cost to you - just find out what is most likely to be in bloom at the time, and you have your colour scheme sorted! Greg is a firm believer that the best weddings are those where the couple have spent the least money:

"The more they can do themselves, or get family and friends to do, the better. These weddings are the best because they are the most personal, and this uniqueness means they don’t look like anybody else’s wedding."

1. Let's Dance

Make a playlist to play through our house PA rather than booking a DJ.

2. Local Decor

Decorate the marquee pole with greenery gathered by the groom and me from our farm the day before the wedding.

3. To Cake...

Ask a relative or friend to make the cake.

4. Or Not To Cake!

If you don’t like cake, have a stack of round cheeses instead.

5. Do Us A Favour...Or Not

Don’t waste money on expensive favours; either don’t bother (most guests won’t notice or care), or make something yourselves than is meaningful to you. For example, we’ve seen packets of wildflower seeds, and chilli jam made by the Groom.

6. What's In A Name?

Why not name your tables after something that means a lot to you? One couple named each table after one of their favourite books. A copy of the book in the middle was all that was required, and later on, I noticed some guests reading the books in the garden!

7. You Did It Your Way

Do what you want to do, not what you think you should be doing. If you don’t want formal speeches or a first dance, then don’t do it! One couple had their dance instructor give everyone a quick dance lesson instead.

8. Come One, Come All

If you have additional evening guests, make them feel special on arrival rather than second class. Ask them to join you at a certain time for a particular event (say the cutting of the cake or the first dance), so they feel they are still taking part in the ceremony of the day.
