GUEST POST - Discover How Poppy Perspective Embraces Sustainable Fabrics in Her Collections and Bespoke Wedding Dresses

26th February 2020

At Poppy Perspective, we create bridal wear with a classic vintage feel and a hint of modern boho cool. In an industry that is known for its overconsumption and waste, being more sustainable is something we are working hard at. This is such an important task within the fashion world and particularly in the bridal industry where we create dresses that most people will only wear once.

As wasteful as this might be, there are now so many ways to ensure your wedding day look is as ethical as possible. Choosing an eco-conscious dress no longer means you have to compromise on style or quality. Below are some of the ways we are minimising our environmental impact.  Whether you have a bespoke dress made just for you, or choose from my customisable Portraits collection, or one-off Cornucopia collection made in reclaimed vintage lace you are choosing a dress with a conscience.

We are proud that all our dresses are designed and made to order by hand in my studio. Nothing is mass-produced, or will ever go to waste. For my debut collection, Portraits, I worked closely with a handful of British suppliers and mills. Most of the fabrics are made to order for me in the amounts I require meaning no waste! I keep all my leftover scraps for toiling new designs and making smaller components like covered buttons and bias binding.

Alongside the main collection, I have also created a series of one-off dresses made in repurposed vintage laces, fabrics and trims. At the core of my ethos is to reuse, reduce and recycle and I collect vintage lace and fabrics everywhere I go to create this range.

When creating bespoke designs for my brides I like to try to use up other peoples waste too by buying ex-designer and dead-stock fabrics that would have been otherwise disposed of. This also means you get drop-dead gorgeous fabrics for a fraction of the price.

The bespoke option is for the bride who wants a totally unique and one of a kind dress. I work closely with my clients throughout the design process and together we create luxurious pieces that are all lovingly handmade in my Kent studio.  I love the fun of building dream dresses from scratch and although I now also offer options from 2 collections bespoke design is where I started. It’s a wonderful journey we go on in the build-up to a wedding and brides are involved at every stage from choosing fabrics to finishing details.

Most dresses are organic silk, which is a highly renewable resource with one of the lowest impacts on climate change of all fibres. Moving forward I am experimenting with even more sustainable options such as citrus fibre silk and bamboo silk. A challenge I am very excited about!

I hope that my brides will love their dress so much they will want to wear it again and again but I also offer the option to have dresses altered to make them more practical!

Although each of our small steps cannot cure climate change, every choice we make can really add up to making a big difference.
