REAL WEDDING - The Sustainable Rainy Day Wedding of Elaine and Andy at Bore Place, Kent, Captured by Harriet Bird Photography, Featuring an Eco-Ethical Wedding Dress by Sanyukta Shrestha

31st January 2020

The Eco-Conscious Rainy Day Wedding of Elaine and Andy at Bore Place, Kent, Captured by Harriet Bird PhotographyThis beautiful wedding proves beyond all doubt that whatever the great British weather throws at your wedding day, it doesn't need to dampen any spirits! It also affirms that a day planned with sustainability at its heart. With celebrations held at Bore Place, who we are proud to have as a GREEN UNION partner, Elaine and Andy's day was full of smiles and laughter; the rain that fell perpetually that October day lent itself to some beautiful images, captured by the very talented Surrey-based photographer, Harriet Bird.

Elaine is a secondary school teacher and Andy works in market research. They met as students at Durham University, although only got together a couple of years after. Elaine describes the proposal:

"Andrew proposed by a mountain lake in the Pyrenees after camping under the stars (well, mist!) the night before. The short version Includes a ring made of Pyrenean flowers, the long version Includes a sprained ankle and some wild horses!"

Now that's a story I'd like to hear, but for now, let's content ourselves with the images of their wedding day!

The Venue

From their early commitment to organic farming to their drive to reduce our carbon emissions by generating green energy, Bore Place continues to evolve with a green agenda and a focus on sustainability at its core.

Bridal Preparations

Elaine's beautiful dress was made by Sanyuka Shrestha, whose dresses are made from eco-friendly and organic fabrics which have been hand-loomed by Nepalese woman from the Tulsi Mehar Mahila Ashram which houses homeless & destitute women.

The Ceremony

Carrying bouquets from a local florist, the rain began just before Elaine and her bridesmaids entered the church, and didn’t stop until the next day! Holding your wedding ceremony and reception at the same venue may be the most eco-friendly option; of course, this is not always possible, as in this case, they wanted a church ceremony. However, Elaine and Andy encouraged car-sharing to cut down on emissions.

Both seasonal and biodegradable, with the lowest possible environmental impact.

The Reception

The favours were wildflower seeds and the placenames hand-written. Elaine remarks upon the styling:

"We tried to keep the decorations simple so there would be little waste, wedding materials were recycled or are re-used (including borrowing a board and paint for a table plan from a friend's wedding a month before!). We asked the florist to use potted plants, including mint on the tables, which we gave away to people after to take home and grow, rather than having loads of flowers that would be chucked."

The Cake

The First Dance

The Photography

"Andy & Elaine’s wedding was filled with love (for each other & the planet!), fun and lots, and lots, and lots of rain. It rained all day but Elaine & Andy didn't even bat an eyelid, they were so relaxed and just took the day as it came. It gave us a good opportunity to take some creative rainy day photographs anyway so I wasn't bothered by it either!

We sneaked out for some couple photographs in the rain whilst guests were mingling inside. Thankfully they were SO chilled about the rain, it is just one of those things you can’t control in England! What most people don’t realise is that rain makes the colours more vibrant, and you can create some really fun and unique wedding photos!"

"Harriet did the photos for our wedding recently and was absolutely fantastic. Despite the weather, she took some really great photos and was able to use the rain to create some memorable images. She was friendly and professional throughout - from when we first contacted her, to her ensuring that the photos were delivered by the time we returned from our honeymoon - and created a good rapport with us and others involved in the wedding. It's been a pleasure working with her and we'd thoroughly recommend her to others.”

Words of Wisdom

I love to find out what, on reflection, a bride wishes she had known, done, or not done! Elaine remarks:

“Firstly, be more decisive! We took months making decisions that could have been made in minutes! At the end of the day, it will be a special day whatever you do.

Secondly, don’t spend too much time listening to others’ advice. Everyone has different perceptions/expectations of a wedding, make it your own.

Finally, enjoy the day. There are not very many occasions when you have all the people you love in one place, so don't stress about everything being perfect and enjoy everyone's presence."

My thanks to Elaine, Andy and Harriet for sharing this wonderful wedding day with us. This wedding is truly an inspiration, and their day beautifully reflected their own eco-conscious beliefs.

The key eco considerations were:

  • they chose a venue with strong eco-credentials;
  • all suppliers were sourced as locally as possible;
  • the wedding dress was from a sustainable designer;
  • the suits were hired;
  • car sharing was encouraged;
  • they made their own all-natural confetti;
  • the decorations were kept simple to reduce waste;
  • favours benefit the environment long after the day;
  • wedding-related items were recycled or re-used;
  • potted plants were used;
  • vegetarian food was served;
  • the guests were asked to give money to charity rather than buy them presents.
