WEDDING DRESS INSPIRATION - Eco Wedding Dress Designer, Indiebride London

19th August 2019

Today I'm delighted to formerly introduce eco wedding dress designer Indiebride London to the GREEN UNION team.

Green Union partner Indiebride LondonIndiebride London is a bridal wear brand based in South London. We offer brides a laid-back approach to purchasing their wedding dress. We are all about beautiful bohemian and vintage-inspired dresses and accessories.

The Owner/Director/Seamstress

Green Union partner Indiebride LondonMy name is Miina and I am the owner, director and seamstress here at Indiebride London. I’m originally from Finland but have been living in London for 5 years. I studied fashion design and manufacturing in Finland and did my internships in London.

I’m not married myself. My family consists of my partner, our cheeky little Yorkshire Terrier-mix Stinky, and ball python Joey. We live in East London.

I’m a laid-back person and enjoy nature and visiting new places. I like tattoos and piercings and I have quite a few myself. I love animals and had all sorts of them when growing up in Finland. I used to play with cats, dogs, bunnies, chickens, goats, parrots etc., but my favourite animal is the elephant. As I obviously can’t have an elephant of my own, I have an elephant tattoo that is also a memorial tattoo for my grandmother. Elephants were our thing.

I work a lot and don’t have much spare time so when I have a day off, I do housekeeping and enjoy my time with my partner and Stinky. We might go for a walk or binge watch Netflix and just relax. I would love to see more of England, Wales and Scotland, but rarely have the time to take the weekend off to do this.

My ethical values grow deep. My family taught me to reuse worn out things and to fix my clothes. If something is broken, you fix it instead of buying a new one. My love for nature also derives from my family. I spent my childhood summers in our summer cottage playing in the forests and lakes, gathering flowers and following the traces of wild animals. I use his ecologically centered energy to steer my company and making ecological choices come naturally to me.

Background

Some 10 years ago, I got an internship in a company called Minna (I know, it’s confusing right?). Minna was a small company owned by a Finnish woman called Minna. She used gorgeous Scottish laces to make beautiful women’s tops and dresses. I stayed in London for two months and went back to finish my studies. When I graduated, I contacted Minna and asked if she had any available positions in the company. She said yes and I moved to London in 2014. Since then, I have been working for the company. Over the years the business model changed and the company started only making wedding dresses. They had two labels; Minna and Indiebride London. Earlier this year I took over the business as Minna wished to pursuit her career as a pilates instructor in Dorset. First thing I did was change the name. The brand being called Minna and my name being Miina has been confusing our brides since I started working here so I took the name Indiebride London, which perfectly describes what we are all about.

The Dresses, Materials and Services

Green Union partner Indiebride LondonIndiebride London takes pride in being a sustainable company. Our heirloom quality bridal gowns and accessories are designed and handmade in London. All our dresses are made to order, which means you can add your personal touch to the style of your dress and make it truly unique. This also means that we don’t mass produce dresses that might end up unsold.

We also love making bespoke dresses so if you haven’t been able to find the perfect wedding dress anywhere, please get in touch and we’ll help you design the wedding dress you’ve always dreamed of.

We don’t believe in bridal trends. Instead, we listen to our customers and design our collections around their feedback. Our brides are women of all ages and sizes, and we love being part of their special day. I also get inspired by the beautiful materials that we use. When I find a beautiful lace fabric, I know what kind of dress that lace is going to become. We keep the fabric waste from the dress production and use it to make our accessories. The off cuts we’re not able to use in the accessories production we donate.

Our bohemian and vintage-inspired wedding dresses are made using natural materials such as cotton and silk to create a laid-back look that makes you feel special, beautiful and comfortable throughout your big day. Most of the materials we use are made in the UK. With the upcoming collection we will introduce an organic cotton lace and an organic fabric made of ramie fiber.

We offer a full alterations service so you can be sure to leave our showroom with a wedding gown that fits you perfectly. We often get approached by expectant brides as well. Our dresses are perfect, soft structured dresses for pregnant brides. Most of our styles can be altered to fit a baby bump and make you feel beautiful and comfortable.

Showroom and Appointments

Green Union partner Indiebride LondonWe have a gorgeous showroom in a church in South London. It’s a quiet oasis on the side of a busy road which is full of lace and silk gowns, vintage furniture, plants and pictures of our brides. You can also find few elephants figurines here and there. As we live in a flatshare and don’t have a home of our own, the showroom is where I put all my interior decoration energy into.

You can book a 1 hour private appointment to try our sample dresses. During your appointment I will help you choose the best and most comfortable dress for you. You can tell me about any ideas or concerns you may have about the dress and the process of purchasing it and we’ll figure out your style and find the perfect dress for you together. Our brides often compare the experience at our showroom with trying on dresses in your grandmother’s attic as it’s such a relaxed and laid-back atmosphere.
