CHARITY GUEST POST - Artist, ‘This Lakshmi’, Creates a Wedding Favours Range for Blood Cancer Charity, Bloodwise
29th July 2019
Contemporary London-based artist, Laxmi Hussain, who works under the pseudonym ‘This Lakshmi’, has created an exclusive wedding favours range to raise money in memory of her Mum, who sadly died from blood cancer. The favours are in aid of blood cancer charity Bloodwise.
Laxmi has supported the charity since her mum died from acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, an aggressive form of blood cancer, in 2018. She has had her drawings and ink paintings exhibited across London, and also runs regular workshops to inspire and educate people to draw and paint. She became a professional artist after having her first child, with motherhood both inspiring her art and giving her an outlet to reclaim her own identity.
Blood cancer, which includes leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma, is diagnosed in over 40,000 people each year in the UK and it is the third biggest cancer killer. Bloodwise is dedicated to funding research into new treatments for the disease and supporting patients and their families. Laxmi said:
“Mum was diagnosed with leukaemia at the end of October 2017 and she died shortly after in May 2018. She didn't have long. One moment she was strong, fit and healthy, working full time, the next a 'typical' cold turned into a visit to A&E and then cancer.
It was in her short phase of treatment that we became aware of Bloodwise and all that they do. Treatment was scary and overwhelming at times. My mum wasn't able to beat cancer and in my grief I sought out other people's journeys as a source of comfort. Although the treatment didn't work for mum, I wanted to know that there were success stories out there. Bloodwise shines a light on this, as well as giving us hope there may one day be a cure.”
