GUEST POST - Introducing MOMOC, Makers of Stylish Sustainable Footwear

19th July 2019

MOMOC is the dream of a Spanish woman, Gabriela, who believes it’s time to take a chic walk on the conscious side.

MOMOC sustainable shoesMOMOC is a new, environmentally-conscious sustainable and ethical fashion shoe start-up based in Spain, using materials mainly sourced from within Spain itself. Extreme care is taken in choosing each and every ecological material for making unique, high-quality shoes that are the perfect combination of trendy, elegant and comfortable.

MOMOC is for every woman who loves fashion and nature

Most of MOMOC's materials are extracted from nature without harming it, such as cork and natural rubber. They aspire to a circular business model, and zero waste is the future. Their shoes are also made from recycled materials; innovative fibres such as pineapple leather; and ecological chrome-free and metal-free tanned leather from Spain.

Their aim is for humans, animals and the environment to always be respected, allowing their customers to walk the planet conscientiously, responsibly and fashionably.

Our Sustainable Materials

Sole: Recycled Natural Rubber

MOMOC sustainable rubber soled shoesRecycled natural rubber is the best alternative to other, less sustainable soles. Natural rubber comes mainly from Vietnam and Malaysia, from the Hevea tree. MOMOC's sole production does not create a CO2 footprint or require the use of water. In addition, the silica footprint (also known as silicon dioxide or SiO2) is controlled through the use of mechanisms that allow silica to be reused, resulting in 0% silica emissions.

Insole: Regenerated Leather

MOMOC sustainable regenerated leather insole shoesRecycling and upcycling is their key objective whenever possible, without compromising quality standards. They use regenerated leather with a silky touch for the insole of their shoes.

Ecological Chrome-Free and Heavy Metal-Free Leather

MOMOC low impact leather sustainable shoesThe manufacturing process reduces the environmental impact to a minimum, reduces water consumption and chemical charge in the effluents and the recycling thereof. This is in addition to their reusing of solid wastes as fertilizers, naturally drying the leather at room temperature, and reducing volatile compound emissions.

They start with carefully selected Iberian hides, conserving the hides in cold storage without any other preserving agents. Then follows a chrome and metal-free tannage (wet-white), along with the use of metal-free dye stuffs and water-based finishes (their leather has Chrome-Free and Metal-Free certification).

Regenerated Leather Heels

The Importance of Packaging

Packaging uses an important amount of resources Worldwide, and packaging designed for a single use ends up in landfills, taking hundred of years to biodegrade, if it ever does at all. Instead, MOMOC uses 100% ecological cotton shoe bags, which can be re-used and are perfect for travelling. We are also investigating the use of recycled and ecological materials for making our shoe bags, which would support our circular business model.
