ADVICE - GREEN UNION Partner Seasons, Wild and Free Share Their Thoughts About Picnic-Style Wedding Catering

10th June 2019

The quintessential English picnic is a beautiful alternative to the constraints of formal dining, and as Seasons, Wild and Free prove, they are the perfect choice for a sustainable wedding breakfast.

GREEN UNION Partner Seasons, Wild and Free Share Their Thoughts About Picnic-Style Wedding CateringPicture it: bespoke waxed apple crates, decorated in floral garlands of your choosing, served inside or out, at tables or on turf, for the ultimate flexible dining experience. Your guests, decanting beautiful, surprise (compostable) packages of yumminess is a great way to get them talking and sharing. They’ll be best friends by speeches! Which, if delayed by the way, won't spoil your room temperature feast!

Whilst the dining style might be informal the food itself can be anything but. From the humble sausage roll to caviar and foie gras (of the ethical variety of course); the picnic wedding is an opportunity not only to choose your favourite grazing menu but also an opportunity to sample beautiful produce from local growers and artisan producers. This ensures you not only eat the best the region has to offer but also gives you an opportunity to support a whole raft of small local experts in their craft with much fewer food miles than sourcing from afar!

Choosing the right caterer with sustainable credentials should ensure mean they have a relationship with or a good understanding of the best makers and growers in the area. Aside from this, make sure you choose one willing to work with your vision. This is a wedding breakfast, not a packed lunch, and as such should be given all the love and attention it deserves. Be it traditional or exotic, relaxed or fine dining, your wedding breakfast should be a celebration feast with no details spared!

So can I have a wedding picnic in my venue? The fact is, you can have almost anything, anywhere to suit your style and budget but with English weather as unpredictable as it is...it's always advisable to have an outpost where your guests can take cover be it a marquee, teepee, barn-yard or banqueting hall. Wherever you choose, I advise only working with venues where you are able to make decisions on the menu and are able to sample you choices before the big day to give you reassurance that it's going to be perfect! Food can be served to tables with cutlery or more traditionally in the great outdoors with rugs or on hay bails, thus further reducingthe environmental cost and as a bonus, your budget too!
