WEDDING FLOWERS INSPIRATION - Foam-Free Floral Design Ideas From Sabine Darrall

22nd May 2019

Today, acclaimed floral designer, Sabine Darrall, talks us through some key elements of wedding venue decor, all constructed without the use of floral foam.

Foam-Free Floral Design Ideas from Sabine DarrallFor over 60 years, floral foam has been the mainstay basis of floral arrangements. However, despite the evolution of foams with enhanced biodegradability, growing concerns over its potential risks to health as well as the environment have prompted many conscious floral designers to go foam-free. Sabine Darrall proves that this is no limitation to one's creativity - quite the opposite, in fact! By adopting different methods of construction, the results have an organic, untamed looseness that speaks to everyone who dreams of a natural wedding.

So what are the alternatives? Luckily, there are many solutions for the typical areas where floral foam might be used to construct wedding day florals.

Arches and Garlands

Foam-Free Floral Design Ideas from Sabine DarrallUse reusable chicken wire armatures, branches or small trees as uprights. Garlands can be made from bunches of foliage on a base of reusable natural fibre rope, with flowers added in reusable test tubes (or even wrapped in water-soaked cotton wool, sealed in a biodegradable nappy or doggie poop bag!). For larger designs such as ceiling hoops, a chicken wire base can also be used.

Pedestal Arrangements

Foam-Free Floral Design Ideas from Sabine DarrallOnce again, chicken wire is your friend for this kind of construction process. Here it is in more detail (note the moss, which is used to prevent spillages - it's natural and reusable, too!):

Table Centres

On a smaller scale, table centres can make use of chicken wire, too. Tape can be used to create a grid, or purpose-made transparent plastic inserts (which are reusable and recyclable) can provide a study base.
