It’s British Flowers Week!

15th June 2015

It’s here at last - the start of #BritishFlowersWeek 2015, the campaign by New Covent Garden Flower Market to promote British flowers and foliage and the UK cut flower industry.  Cut flowers are enjoying a resurgence in demand, just as interest in locally-grown food has developed, so people are once again appreciating the value of locally-grown, freshly cut flowers!  And what a week it's promising to be.

I originally ‘fell’ into weddings from a career in fashion, creating gorgeous wedding flowers with a difference and, ever since I launched Green Union way back in the good old days, I’ve banged on about the need to source local and seasonally for your wedding.

You know, most of the flowers that you buy in your local florist on the high street will have been grown by large scale commercial growers in Holland, South America and Africa and routed through the Dutch auctions.  Do you really want to buy a flower that has travelled thousands of miles to get to your wedding bouquet?  Green Union’s handpicked florists don't use them, they grow their own and/or use British flowers and foliage when they need to.

Now I’m so delighted that there is such a strong movement within the British flower industry to bring flowers back to Britiain.  You can do you part to encourage this by buying British seasonal flowers whenever you can and supporting a revitalised British movement!

This week I will be posting stories of Green Union’s lovely handpicked florists and flower growers with seasonal ideas and inspiration plus lots of lovely photos of flowers.  Here's a taster ...
