REAL WEDDING - The Heartfelt DIY Wedding Of Childhood Sweethearts, Kirsty And Will, Captured By GREEN UNION Partner Benni Carol At The Remenham Club, Henley-On-Thames

REAL WEDDING - The Heartfelt DIY Wedding Of Childhood Sweethearts, Kirsty And Will, Captured by GREEN UNION Partner Benni Carol At The Remenham Club, Henley-On-ThamesKirsty, a doctor, and Will, a civil engineer, both grew up in small villages near Reading; they even went to the same primary school, and have been a couple since they were 17,  when Will started helping Kirsty with her physics AS level!

Will proposed to Kirsty with a surprise picnic by the river in Henley-on-Thames. It was the same spot where they had their first kiss all those years ago! It was perfect. Despite choosing a rowing club as their venue, the course to their wedding day was any but plain sailing:

"We had a slightly longer engagement than initially planned as unfortunately Will was diagnosed with cancer in the run-up to the original wedding date, which required surgery and chemotherapy. We postponed and this gave us extra time to do a lot of DIY and handmade touches! By the time the new date came around, we had spent approximately 18 months planning it."

Thankfully, Will made a sterling recovery and they finally tied the knot on September 8th 2018 - two years ago yesterday! In addition to all their DIY endeavours, they incorporated may eco-conscious touches into their wedding day, including prioritising local suppliers where possible to reduce the overall environmental impact of their wedding day.

"It is a beautiful salon located in Henley-on-Thames: they were perfect and accommodated me and my five bridesmaids brilliantly well on the morning of the wedding. I loved my hair so much! They were really lovely and I’d highly recommend them for any brides in the local area."

Makeup was taken care of by Rona Paterson:

"Ron was a bridesmaid who happens to be fab at doing makeup! It was lovely having her to do my makeup in the morning as it was so relaxing and she already knew my style!"

Kirsty's gorgeous wedding dress was the 'Olsen' gown by Daughters of Simone from the Jean Jackson Couture boutique:

"The minute I came across Daughters of Simone, I knew their dresses were perfect for me. Their style is very boho – which is just what I was looking for. My dress, complete with tassels, was perfect for our vibe! I couldn’t believe it when I discovered that a beautiful independent bridal boutique, literally around the corner from me, stocked Daughters of Simone wedding dresses! Flic, from Jean Jackson Couture, was just amazing and completely put me at ease when trying on dresses: she really completed the experience for me!"

Her bridesmaids' attire was sourced by them for We Are Rewritten, Pretty Little Thing, Lulus, H&M and Very:

"I asked all bridesmaids to pick their own dresses so they were all comfortable and happy with whatever they wore. The only brief was they had to be a shade of green."

Their lovely hair garlands were from Sass and Halo:

"Aoife was just PERFECTION! Her gorgeous flower crowns really completed me and my boho bridesmaids look. She is amazing and listened really carefully to my vision for my crown! She’s so talented and ships all around the world! I would HIGHLY recommend her! She’s fabulous!"

Their bouquets, which coordinated perfectly with the hair accessories, were created by Brambles:

"Erica from Brambles was absolutely incredible: I was so happy with our bouquets and buttonholes that she created. She listened so carefully to what my vision was and she produced my absolute dream bouquet. It was lovely using the florist from the next-door village and I honestly couldn’t recommend her enough."

The Groom & Groomsmen

"Will typically has a very laid back approach to everything in life, and he buying his suit was no exception….he bought it the day before the wedding which included a 50-mile round trip to pick up the last pair of trousers in the area…(I’m only just finding this bit out now!)."

His groomsmen wore their own suits with matching handmade bow ties by Will’s mum.

"They have a lovely choice of VW campervans which was perfect for our boho day. The ride in the VW campervan from the church to the reception, with a glass of champagne, was just perfect! They even personalize the campervan with your names and wedding date."

Acoustic music and vocals were provided by Megan Henwood:

"Megan was absolutely perfect for us – she has the most beautiful voice and her acoustic version of “here comes the sun” whilst I walked down the aisle, was one of my favourite moments of the day."

The couple exchanged bespoke wedding rings by Steven Stone:

"This is where Will designed my engagement ring. We love our wedding rings and we loved the process of designing them."

Emerging from the church as husband and wife, the couple were treated to a fabulous confetti shower using rose petals that they dried themselves from bouquets that would otherwise have been thrown away.

The Portraits

"We honestly can’t thank Benni Carol enough, they are the most perfect photographers in the entire world! From the day we first got in contact with them we knew they were the ones: we love their style of photography (very natural), which is just what we were looking for. They are the loveliest people ever and they genuinely added to our day. Thank you SO much – we are forever grateful and the photos are just everything we could have hoped for and more."

The marquee and lighting were supplied by Big Top Mania:

"Lucas from Big Top Mania was brilliant to work with! We loved our marquee and it was just perfect for the vibe of our day. They also supplied ambient atmospheric lighting, both for inside and outside of the marquee. We couldn’t recommend Big Top Mania enoug; such a lovely, family-run business."

The furniture came from Chairman Hire:

"We loved the vintage wooden chairs and tables! They were perfect for the vibe of the day. Chairman Hire was brilliant to work with, great customer service and the delivery of the furniture was perfectly on time! Would highly recommend!"

Their catering was provided by Clark Caterers:

"The food was so delicious! People still talk about how much they loved the food to this day!"

Their decor was brimming with personal and eco-friendly touches:

"We had a very DIY wedding including learning the art of macrame! We wanted to bring the outside in (we’re both obsessed with greenery and foliage) - we created a hanging centrepiece in our marquee, which held lots of trailing foliage and plants in macrame hangers. We also created a big macrame wall hanging and bunting. We have kept all the macrame we made for our flat, which we think looks great. The macrame cord used throughout was all made from recycled cotton cord and natural jute rope.

Most our decoration was natural foliage; we used lots of eucalyptus from a tree that our neighbour had cut down. Perfect timing! We collected lovely empty gin bottles (that were going to waste from local bars) to hold greenery for the tables.

We used sections of fallen down logs for place settings (we used pyrography to burn peoples names onto them) which also served as favours. We think this worked well as quite often wedding favours can go to waste, however not a single person left behind their personalised place setting. As well as the personalised log place settings, we donated money to cancer research and Maggies (an incredible cancer charity that helped us both massively during Will’s illness).

We also repurposed old pallets for our welcome sign, seating plan, photo display and the order of the day."

They even designed and printed all their wedding day stationery - what a super creative pair!

The First Dance

Real Wedding -the First Dance Captured by GREEN UNION Partner Benni Carol At The Remenham ClubKirsty and Will took to the dancefloor for their first dance, before all the guests enjoyed the rest of the evening accompanied by live band, Truly Medley Deeply:

"We absolutely fell in love with Truly Medley Deeply after hearing them for the first time when a friend recommended them to us. Their fun and unique style made for an amazing evening of dancing. They were incredible!"

My thanks to Benni Carol Photography, and of course to Kirsty and Will for sharing their wedding day with GREEN UNION. I wish you a lifetime of health and happiness together!
