REAL WEDDING - The Eco-Conscious Woodland Wedding Of Emily And Daniel, Captured By Gina Manning Photography At Chaucer Barn, NorfolkToday's wedding from late August features a beautiful outdoor ceremony in the grounds of an exquisite country wedding venue.

Emily and Daniel met in 2014 during their final year at university when they were both Editors of the university paper. Fast forward to July 2017 and Daniel proposed on the stunning Holkham Beach. Two years of planning went into their wedding day; Emily is vegan so it was important to her that sustainability was high on the list of priorities for the wedding day, which as you'll see was full of conscious planning decisions and thoughtful choices.

Gina Manning captured their day and Emily explains why they chose her:

"Gina actually shot my Mum’s wedding several years prior and we loved her photos. It was also important to us to have someone we felt comfortable with and as we’d met her before. I’m pretty self-conscious about photos and I loved Gina’s style so much that I was able to see the beauty in them that I am usually oblivious to if I am in the shot! She was a true gem and we cannot recommend her enough."

She was also full of praise for Mary, wedding planner at Weddings by Mary:

"She was AMAZING at helping pull the day together the fortnight before. As all of our suppliers were individually sourced and managed, it was becoming just too much for us so we brought Mary in as our on the day coordinator and thank god we did... She was a lifesaver! She pulled it all together in time. She was calm, professional and a pure angel! Would give her all the shout outs in the world if we could!"

The Venue

"[It is] the most BEAUTIFUL venue! I always wanted a wedding surrounded by greenery and beauty and that’s exactly what we got with Chaucer. The stunning grounds were the ultimate perfect setting and due to all the different areas within the grounds and the barn itself, we were able to have the ceremony, meal and reception all in the one place but in distinctly different parts of the venue. The organisation was fabulous by the Chaucer Barn team and we were able to visit as many times as we wanted."

"They spent so much time during the trial to make sure I was happy with the outcome and took on all my points made so that on the day everything was perfect. They were great to have there in the morning and helped keep things calm and running to time."

Emily confesses that her wedding dress quest was something of a challenge:

"I had a nightmare with my wedding dress and this was actually my second one. I was devastated when the dress I had ordered off the back of trying on a sample size was so awful in my own size. I cried and cried and had to quickly find another dress. Throughout the wedding period, I had a stomach condition which meant I couldn’t wear a tight dress as I had a lump on my left side – this was so hard for me as I’d always imagined myself in a slinky dress. Instead, I ended up in a more ballgown type dress after the lady at Wed2B assured me she could find me a dress off the rack that would suit me and cover up my stomach. I wasn’t wild about my wedding dress, but due to my insecurities, I don’t think I would have ever found ‘the one’. I tried on 110+ dresses in the end...it was quite the nightmare!"

I'm sure you agree that she looked beautiful - and we are all our own worst critics! Speaking of which, her 8 bridesmaids and flowergirls, as you can imagine, also had their fair share of insecurities:

"I managed to find a style of dress that worked for the insecurities of all six bridesmaids. They were all different shapes, sizes with different hang-ups so I knew I had a tough job on my hands! TFNC also had a different style of dress in the exact same colour that I then put my flowergirls in (older flower girls aged 14 and 16)."

They exchanged vows in front of a living Willow arch which had been accented with blooms by Rambling Rose Florist for a subtle injection of their dusky rose colour palette.

The bridesmaids handed out handfuls of Shropshire Petals dried confetti, which Emily commented was both "beautiful, smelled great and had the perfect colours".

"I had always imagined having a steel drum band at my wedding because I love the music so much. These guys did a fab job and also provided entertainment via the limbo which guests loved and found hilarious!"

The Wedding Breakfast

"With being vegan and having a severe garlic allergy, it took a lot for me to trust a caterer. Purple Plum were the only ones I felt assured would cater for my allergy, I never usually let anyone cook for me except my husband and my Mum so it was a big leap of faith but she allowed as many phonecalls and needed and testing sessions which was great. She made everything from scratch in extra clean equipment and on the day it was brilliant – I always thought I'd actually just have to smuggle a sandwich into my own wedding but to be able to eat what everyone else was eating was an incredible feeling for me."

"My mum made the most beautiful cake and I’m so grateful for all her time and effort she put into practising it and executing it."

The Film

"Tom was recommended to us by our photographer, Gina. We were drawn in by his stunning videos – they looked like Hollywood films! I wanted our day to look as beautiful as the other ones we saw on his website so we booked him! When we met him we were so pleased we had – he was so lovely and personable and made a real point in getting to know us prior to the big day. Gina and Tom worked so well together on the day too which was so helpful."

Here are some of the key things Emily and Daniel did to make our wedding more ethical and green:

  • Choose a venue with eco credentials, where you can get ready on site and accommodate guests to minimise travel requirements.
  • Ensure all makeup products used are vegan.
  • Have an unplugged outdoor ceremony with no electricity usage.
  • Hire formalwear.
  • Select local suppliers.
  • Serve vegan food and alcohol.
  • Serve buffet-style food to minimise waste and repurpose any leftovers as evening snacks.
