WEDDING INSPIRATION - Chasing Waterfalls: Elopement Portrait Ideas to Fall In Love With, Captured by Leonie May Photography

19th June 2020

A post-lockdown society will see many changes, and in the wedding industry, one can imagine there will be more than in most. The greatest gain for a world that was practically shut down has been the plethora of environmental benefits, and it has been encouraging to see that there is a willingness from individuals, politicians and big business to sustain these benefits into the future. For weddings, this may mean many things, including smaller gatherings, bringing with them a reduction in travel and waste, and an easing of strained finances.

By far the most environmentally friendly union has always been the elopement - just the two of you and a photographer to capture the moments; and in the 'new normal', one hopes that they increase in popularity. As this photoshoot by Leonie May Photography proves, an elopement provides opportunities for couple photography that the typical wedding does not: you have the time to venture to remote beauty spots; you can explore of an even wider range of emotions, from edgy and sensual to playful and romantic; you can let the weather do its thing to your hair without worrying about your evening guests; and you to dance like no one is looking, as they aren't!

Leonie tells us a little more about the concept for this photoshoot:

"I’m super inspired by the world around us, mother nature creates some seriously epic backdrops and for me pairing golden hour with a waterfall is the way to go! I didn’t think finding an epic waterfall in the UK would be easy but this one in Wales was stunning. We used a dress I’ve had for a long while now that I reuse for photoshoots; most of my favourite dress brands are avoiding that fast fashion, 'only wear once' type of vibe and I hugely love seeing brides rent or borrow dresses (I hope to restyle my mums when I get married!). I also love the idea of not spending a ton of money on a dress that is most likely (especially during my style of photography) going to get wet, muddy and walked on because I'm all about adventuring and finding those hidden spots in nature, it is so worth it. It’s the same with the headpieces; they are reusable and that’s something I love about personal wedding items, they don’t have to be your traditional bridal pieces, I love things that are a little different, unique and personal."

Still not persuaded that an elopement is for you? Let's get to these two photographic sessions and I think you will be!

Waterfall Elopement: Part One

Leonie explains:

"We went for quite a dramatic look because that bold lip and that waterfall, what a combination! We felt it was almost like a french romance film. I'm all about things being perfectly imperfect; the hair all wet from the rain just made things that little bit more special for me."

Waterfall Elopement: Part Two

Leonie explains:

"We wanted to keep this session nice and minimal to really showcase both nature and the love between the couple as the main event, but managed to also create an angelic look that really complemented the setting, and the hair was so dreamy too!"
