You are minimising the carbon footprint of the event - but how about going further, and leaving a positive legacy for the planet in celebration of your special day? How about dedicating a tree? It is a wonderful way to remember your day while giving back to the planet. Make It Wild, who own land in Yorkshire, which they manage entirely for nature, can arrange this for you. Their Tree Dedications are a wonderful way to mark the start of your new life together. Traditional wedding gift lists are becoming less relevant to eco-conscious couples, and those who may already have everything they need. Perhaps you would prefer a less materialistic, and more meaningful and unique way for friends to celebrate your marriage? Make It Wild will plant a young native woodland tree at one of their beautiful North Yorkshire nature reserves, where they will protect it, and look after it for decades to come. They will let you know exactly which tree you have dedicated, and where it is. They will send you a personalised certificate, with a message of your choice and a map of the site, showing the exact location of the tree. You could even arrange to visit the tree!
There is also the option to choose a tree dedication with a plaque. Make It Wild can place a wooden tree plaque next to your tree, which will be engraved with words of your choice.
If you want to make more of an impact, Make It Wild can arrange the sponsorship of a whole woodland – this can be anything from a few trees to a few hundred. You could ask each guest to contribute and make a wonderful woodland! What a fantastic way to remember your wedding day!
Make It Wild give you the choice of which nature reserve you would like your tree to grow. At Bank Woods Nature Reserve, which is a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation in the stunning Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, your tree would be secure in a deer-fenced woodland area, among or between precious Ancient Woodlands. At Sylvan Nature Reserve on the banks of the River Nidd, your tree would be among other young woodland trees.
Just like your green wedding, trees are good for the environment for a whole host of reasons:
A tree can be dedicated at Make It Wild for many different occasions, not just weddings. A new tree is considered a symbol of good health, and of new life, so it’s the perfect gift for a newborn. Customers also like to dedicate trees on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, as many cultures acknowledge the importance of Mother Earth and Father Sun; a tree has roots in the earth and grows towards the sun feeding on its energy. Trees are also thought of as immortal, by some, because they can live for hundreds of years. When they eventually die and fall to the ground they go on to support all kinds of life – this is why tree dedications can be a special way to remember the passing away of a loved one.
Make It Wild don’t stop at tree dedications. Their nature reserves are home to many ponds among the woodland. They add to biodiversity by providing habitat for wading birds and amphibians, and even a place for mammals to drink. Make it Wild are proud to have thirty unique and precious veteran and notable trees in their Ancient Woodland. These are all listed on the Ancient Tree Inventory. If you would like to dedicate a veteran tree to mark your wedding, this is also an option! These beautiful old trees are a fantastic feature of Ancient Woodland; they support hundreds of different fungi and insects, and of course, they are irreplaceable!
You can even dedicate a ‘living wildflower bouquet’! Make it Wild offer bluebell dedications and they have also planted meadows of wildflowers which can be dedicated too. These are a fantastic boost to our bees and other insects which are struggling. If you choose to have flowers at your wedding, this would be a wonderful way to ‘pay back’ to the world. These flowers will look beautiful in their natural location for many years to come.
Their FlowerBurst seed bombs make lovely wedding favours. Make it Wild are worried about bees and other pollinators and want to give them a helping hand. Planting wildflower seeds is a great way to help! These wildflower seed bombs are made by hand in small batches from a mixture of wildflower seeds, combined with a special peat-free organic compost mixture to protect them from being eaten by birds. This also provides them with an early moisture boost as they start to germinate in Spring. No gardening skills are required!
