JEWELLERY: In Praise of Fairtrade JewellersTweet
Well, we came to the end of Fairtrade Fortnight a week ago and events have conspired against me blogging during the past weeks about all Green Union’s fantastic handpicked partners who practise Fairtrade with a passion. That doesn’t mean I can’t continue to sing their praises, so today I do just want to squeeze in all our brilliant jewellers who deserve that extra bit of recognition for sticking to their beliefs and being hugely instrumental in establishing the Fairtrade Gold standard that now exists to give you, lovely brides and grooms, total confidence that you are buying truly ethical engagement rings, wedding rings and other jewellery.
I recently featured Cred Jewellery in a previous post so now it’s the turn of four other incredibly creative jewellers …
April Doubleday hand makes stunning bespoke ethical jewellery, including wedding and engagement rings, from her studio in North Devon. All her work is unique and influenced by the surrounding environment of seascapes, beaches, cliffs and hills. April sources all her gold via the Fairtrade Gold organisation, her diamonds are all traceable and she uses ethically sourced gems in all of her work.
Arabel Lebrusan has recently launched a new collection of rings to celebrate spring and they are absolutely fabulous! Arabel was among the first jewellers to embrace Faitrade Gold and has a lot to say about it. Check out this video of Arabel’s lecture on the issues here. The UK-based Spanish jewellery designer is both a visionary and a creative who has an urge to make. She says she is happiest in a bubble, when she is designing beautiful jewellery that reflects and preserves the ancient European traditions and skills.
Ingle & Rhode, based in London, have established themselves at the forefront of the ethical jewellery movement. Their diamonds and gems can be traced back to the mine of origin and aren’t just guaranteed conflict-free, but come only from suppliers that treat workers with dignity and respect, and mitigate their impact on the environment. All of their jewellery is designed and made in the UK by some of the most repected craftswomen and men in the industry, whose extraordinary talents show in the exquisite finish of each piece.
Kate Pearse of Glasswing Jewellery has just updated me with a little bit of exciting news - she is now registered with the Fairtrade Foundation as a ‘Fairtrade Jeweller’ which means she can now offer clients fairtrade gold and silver as well as fairtrade gemstones. This is fantastic news as her work is unique and quirky and she deserves all the recognition she can get! Kate designs and makes jewellery from her rural workshop in the heart of the beautiful South Downs National Park. As well as working with precious metals and gemstones, Kate also specialises in sea glass rings and jewellery using genuine sea glass found on the beaches of Cornwall and throughout the world.
For Fairtrade Gold, miners receive a guaranteed Fairtrade Minimum Price and Premium (,000/kg) to invest in improving their business or in community projects such as education, clean water and healthcare. Becoming Fairtrade certified and meeting Fairtrade Standards for gold helps miners formalise and improve their mining and business practices. This includes strict Standards on working conditions, health and safety, handling chemicals, women’s rights, child labour and protection of the environment.
