Stress - by invitation only!

stonecircle.jpgThis week Vineeta and I finally got around to organising our wedding invitations. I thought that this would be the one part of organising the wedding that would actually be fun. Having not been impressed by any standard invitations we had decided to make our own, and it started off great. We made a stone circle on the beach near where we are having our wedding and photographed it, then created a design on the computer.

But then we had to print them off. Wanting to minimise the environmental impact we looked for options. Commercial printing was basically out of the window, because the quantities were too small and every card was different, so it wouldn't be practical. So we'd have to print them at home, and that meant that we couldn't use vegetable based inks either. We did buy refilled cartridges from Cartridge World though.

We had more success on the paper. We wanted something that had some eco credential but was also a bit special and eventually settled on Ellie Poo Paper. We ordered a pack of card suitable for ink jet printing. Actually it was a bit too thick for the printer but we forced it in and eventually managed to persuade the printer to get on with the job. Our intention to make the cards double sided just wasn't going to work though, so we altered the design and put all the info on one side. Consequently each invitation used twice as much card as planned.

But, we only had a limited supply of card and although we could have bought more, we thought why not avoid the extra paper and postage by sending some email invitations. Admittedly, its not as classy as a printed version, but we figured that most of my friends won't care, and they'll be less likely to lose it if its in their email accounts, so its actually better for everyone. So we are sending printed invitations to family members and those without email addresses, and emailing most of our friends with an electronic version. We just hope that no-one will get upset that they are not all the same.

It turned out to be a pretty stressful exercise, but the result is really good and we think we've done a reasonable job of keeping the environmental impact to a minimum. On top of that, we're using the card offcuts as christmas present labels, so nothing is going to waste.
